Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, defined Reiki as:
“Rei” (霊) meaning “spiritual” or “universal”, and
“Ki” (気) meaning “life energy” or “vital force.”
Together, Reiki can be interpreted as:
“Spiritually guided life force energy.”
Usui saw Reiki not just as a hands-on healing technique, but as a path to spiritual development and personal transformation. He emphasized:
Living in harmony with universal energy.
Practicing daily precepts (Gokai) like gratitude, honesty, and compassion.
Using Reiki for mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, not just physical healing.
Just for today:
Do not anger.Do not worry.Be grateful.Work diligently.Be kind to others.
These were central to Usui’s original teaching and show that his definition of Reiki extended beyond healing—it was a way of life.
